The Sine Method: An Alternative Height Measurement Technique

چکیده

Height is one of the most important dimensions of trees, but few observers are fully aware of the consequences of the misapplication of conventional height measurement techniques. A new approach, the sine method, can improve height measurement by being less sensitive to the requirements of conventional techniques (similar triangles and the tangent method). We studied the sine method through a couple of comparisons. First, we demonstrated the validity of the sine method under idealized conditions by comparing tangent and sine measurements on a stationary object of a known height. Then, we compared heights collected via climbing and lowering a tape from the highest point of a number of forest-grown trees with heights measured with the sine method. The sine method offers a viable, cost effective alternative to traditional measurement approaches, especially for large or leaning trees, and for trees with broadly spreading

An Improved Tree Height Measurement Technique Tested on Mature Southern Pines

Virtually all techniques for tree height determination follow one of two principles: similar triangles or the tangent method. Most people apply the latter approach, which uses the tangents of the angles to the top and bottom and a true horizontal distance to the subject tree. However, few adjust this method for ground slope, tree lean, crown shape, and crown configuration, making errors commonp...

The Sine Method as a More Accurate Height Predictor for Hardwoods

Most hypsometers apply a mathematical technique that utilizes the tangent of angles and a horizontal distance to deliver the exact height of a tree under idealized circumstances. Unfortunately, these conditions are rarely met for hardwoods in the field. “new” predictor based on sine and slope distance and discussed here does not require the same assumptions for accurate height determination. A Survey on Current Methods of Carpal Height Ratio Measurement and Suggestion of a New Method

Background & Aims: Two famous methods are commonly used for the measurement of carpal height ratio. Both methods are performed on anteroposterior radiogram and have some shortcomings. We are going to introduce a new method for measuring this index in lateral view of the wrist radiogram' Methods: This cross-sectional and case-control study was conducted on 100 anteroposterior and lateral radiogr...

Simultaneous Measurement of Impulse Response and Distortion with a Swept-Sine Technique

A novel measurement technique of the transfer function of weakly not-linear, approximately time-invariant systems is presented. The method is implemented with low-cost instrumentation; it is based on an exponentially-swept sine signal. It is applicable to loudspeakers and other audio components, but also to room acoustics measurements. The paper presents theoretical description of the method an...

Arm circumference to height-ratio (AHtR) – an alternate tool to identify overweight and obesity in children aged 5-12 years

Background and Objective: Childhood obesity is one of the major national health concerns. World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends Body mass index (BMI) as the standard epidemiological measurement of obesity. The BMI is not quite independent of stature, especially at the younger ages. Hence, an alternative tool like arm-circumference-to-height ratio (AHtR) is necessitated. The aim of this stu...
